Children in Need

We had a great time supporting Children in Need this year.  Our theme was "Be a Hero" some of us came as our favourite super hero and some of us arrived dressed as our personal hero.

We were very busy with cakes and flapjacks to eat, money to count and Pudsey Bear activities.  Here are a few photographs of our day.

Keeping Safe

We have been thinking about all the ways grown ups keep us safe.  Here are some of our ideas.

Keeping safe at school:

* Fire alarms
* School rules - like not running inside
* Lock the outside doors with special locks
* Head counts

Keeping safe at home:

* Locking windows so we don't fall out
* Using fire guards and telling us not to touch
* Holding hands when we walk
* Teaching us how to cross the road
* Home rules - like staying away from the oven
* Locking the doors before we go to bed

Homework Project

This half term we will be learning about life and objects in the past as part of our history work.  Today we started by thinking about our own history and had a go at ordering the important events in our lives.  These included being born, walking, our first day at nursery and learning to ride a bike.

Then we had a think about what other important events might happen to us as we grow up.  We thought about leaving school, going to university, learning to drive and even getting married but the most exciting question was “what will we be when we grow up?”  Now Miss Farrar and Miss Atwal are still wondering what they might like to be when they grow up so they would like some help!

We would like the children to work with their grown-ups to decide what they would like to be when they grow up.  They could draw or paint a picture of themselves in their job, make a poster to explain what they would do in their job or create a presentation on the computer (needs to be on a disc or USB stick to be shared with the class).  We would like to know why they have picked that job, what they think they will enjoy about it and what special things they will have to do in their job.

How the children present their ideas is really up to them but after all the wonderful Me Box work we are very excited to see what they come up with!

All homework should be bought to school on Monday 8th of December ready for presentations all that week.

Free Gifts

We have enjoyed sending gifts to less fortunate children through the Operation Christmas Child Event and it has made us think about how it feels to receive a gift.  We all agree it feels really good and we have decided to give lots of people some gifts that cost us nothing.  Have a look at our photos and see if you could give someone a free gift too.

You could give a smile

You could give a high five

You could hug your family

You could say good morning

Me Boxes

This half term our homework task was to create a box to tell our new teachers al about us. Miss Atwal and Miss Farrar were very impressed with our presentations. They took photographs of all our boxes and made a fantastic display.

Local Area Walk

In geography we have been learning about the local area. We discussed the shops and facilities we have in Rise Park and went on a walk to the explore these things.

Can you spot the Dentist and Chip Shop in our photos? Ask us how many different ways we can safely cross the road.

Welcome to Year One 2014

It has already been a fantastic start to the new school year and we are only on day 2! Miss Atwal and Miss Farrar are certain that this means we are going to have an amazing year.

The children have already shown us that they are ready to learn and have made some beautiful pieces of work for us to display.

Don't forget to keep an eye on this blog throughout the year to see lots of photographs and examples of our work.

There will be lots of exciting information coming home over the next week or two, including reading volunteers, our homework project and the Big Read Challenge so please check your child's book bag for these letters.

Saturday 19 July 2014

Well it is nearly the end of a very busy year.  All of the year one staff are very proud of how hard the children have worked this year.  We have enjoyed watching them grow, become more confident and better learners.
On Friday 18th July we enjoyed our award ceremony.  Everyone won a prize and some children got special recognition for best attendance, pupil choice award, best attitude, biggest smile and most consistent effort.
Congratulations to everyone and keep up the hard work in year 2!

Wow, year one had a fantastic time on Friday 18th July when Tamba Roy came in to do story telling with us!  All year we have been saving our Investors in Pupils money and we used it to listen to Tamba for an hour.  We had stories and songs and we even learnt some breathing techniques.
A wonderful time was had by all!

All of the children understand the importance of punctuality and attendance at school so hopefully everyone will be able to have a turn next time.
